Of course, there’s one item in particular that springs to mind. A book his mother gave him shortly before she died——-a book he’d never understood the importance of until recently.
“It’s a book, okay?”

Of all of his possessions that made it out of the fire, there’s only one thing that holds true value to him, and he knew that if the others found out that none besides Derek would understand the significance.
“A copy of Kerouac’s On the Road. “
He personally couldn’t stand the book–it was too dry and bland for his liking–but it was the only physical thing he had left that had belonged to her.
