History:
Derek was born to Talia and Collin Hale, a mated pair of 'wolves. The middle child of the two born 'wolves, there was a lot of expectations and obligations put on him, but he always managed to rise to the occassion, succeeding even when it seemed impossible.
Growing up in such a large pack, Derek learned quickly what each person added to the dynamic, and he helped out in anyway that he could, which included babysitting and caring for his cousins and sister when need be. He learned the basic essentials in the difference of caring for a fellow 'wolf and a human as well as what it means to be Pack.
It didn't take long for the adults to realize which position each one of their children would fill once they were older and the adults were gone. Laura was a natural leader, an alpha in the making, and Derek was very obviously her Second. The two were close--closer than any of the other children--and often times never even needed to communicate verbally in order to get their messages across.
When he was 15 years old, Derek met a girl by the name of Paige, and the two hit it off despite the rough start. He found himself falling for her in ways he never thought imaginable, so when Peter brought up the fact that she would find out his secret, he feared that he'd lose her. Rather impulsively, he confronted a visiting alpha named Ennis and made a deal to have him change her until, at the last minute, he decided against it. But it was too late. She'd been bitten, and her body was rejecting the Bite. Not knowing what to do or where to go, he carried her to their secret hiding place, the roots of the Nemeton, where he took away as much pain as he could. Eventually Paige convinced him to put her out of her misery, and with a heavy heart, he killed the first girl he'd ever loved.
After that, Derek started to distance himself from the rest of his family and his teammates. This continued until the end of the school year and through the start of the next year. Everyone expected him to stay in the funk, except no one expected him to meet and fall for another woman as quickly as he did. Having to keep their relationship a secret, Derek started to become the man he was before Paige's death. That is, until the woman he'd loved ended up murdering most of his family in an arson attack.
Fast forward six years later when he finally returned back to Beacon Hills, trying to find his sister. Finding her dead body, he knew that he couldn't leave, needing to get revenge on the person who murdered her, which he did in the form of ripping out his own uncle's throat once he realized that he'd killed Laura.
Shortly after becoming an alpha, Derek started building his Pack, choosing to Bite those who needed family and needed the the benefits of being a 'wolf. Only, instead of all of them turning into normal werewolves like they should have, Jackson turned into something different---a kanima.
Teaming up with Scott and his little Scooby Gang, Derek and his Pack eventually defeated both the threat of Gerard and managed to turn Jackson into the normal 'wolf he was meant to be.
Then came the Alpha Pack and the threat of the Darach. Trying to figure out both who was ritualistically killing people as well as fending off the attacks of the Alpha Pack, Derek and his own Pack faced many challenges: some coming in the way of familiar faces and some coming in the way of losing their members. They eventually succeeded, and after the betrayal of another lover, he decided to go with his sister Cora back to South America.
During his trip to South America with Cora, the two of them ran across a pack of 'wolves who'd been attacked by a group of Hunters. Seeing the alpha in pain, he tried to take as much pain away as possible, hoping that it'd help the man to heal. When it became clear to Derek and the other man that there was no healing from the extensive wounds, the alpha asked Derek to end it for him. Derek was hesitant at first, but he couldn't deny the man was in excruciating pain, so he gave him what he wanted: freedom from the pain. Thus, Derek was restored to alpha status.
*Please note that a lot of Derek's past is made up by me. Since not much is known about him, I tried to make him a full history that wouldn't contradict with anything that is canonly given on the show, though I do take a bit of liberty when it comes to ages and years since it seems like no one on the show is really all that great with that sort of thing anyways.
**Also note that if you are a Peter, Cora, Laura, or any other part of the original Hale family, I will not enforce my ideas of the Pack's build or history or relationships on you. This is simply a way for others (myself included) to understand Derek a little better.
